CHALLENGE
As the oldest synagogue west of the Mississippi still in use, Ahavath Beth Israel holds deep historic and cultural significance in Boise. The challenge was to update the next door service headquarters to meet the needs of the community. The renovation needed to address accessibility and finishes in a way that respected the building’s spiritual atmosphere and community role.
SOLUTION
We approached the project with sensitivity to the synagogue’s legacy. The work focused on selective interior renovations, including updated finishes, improved lighting, and enhanced accessibility. Inspiration from the building’s iconic exterior massing and rhythm of masonry forms guided material choices and detailing within, creating cohesion between the historic envelope and refreshed interior.
RESULT
The renovation breathed new life into Ahavath Beth Israel headquarter building, ensuring that the synagogue continues to serve its congregation for decades to come. By blending careful preservation with thoughtful modernization, the project honored the building’s heritage while enhancing comfort, functionality, and inclusivity. The synagogue remains a cherished landmark for both the Jewish community and the wider Boise public.
