We approached the project with a modern farmhouse aesthetic that fit naturally into the North End context but was expressed in a clean, contemporary way. Large windows were used to flood the interiors with natural light and extend sightlines, making the rooms feel larger than their actual size. Open planning allowed the main living spaces to flow together seamlessly, creating a sense of volume and connection. To blur the boundary between indoors and outdoors, we designed a central courtyard that functions as an extension of the living space, accessible through large sliding glass doors. This outdoor room provides privacy while still feeling open, creating a balance of retreat and connection to the neighborhood. RESULT The result is a warm and inviting home that lives much larger than its modest footprint. The interiors are filled with light, and the courtyard acts as a year-round gathering space that brings the family together. The design successfully balances the character of the North End with the family’s desire for a modern lifestyle, offering a home that is efficient, comfortable, and enduring. This residence shows how thoughtful design can turn a small infill lot into a place of openness, comfort, and lasting value.
