CHALLANGE

This single-family residence is located in the Roaring Fork River Valley, a region facing persistent construction challenges driven by labor shortages, escalating costs, and limited contractor availability. The client sought a high-quality mountain home that could be delivered with predictability and precision despite these constraints. The project needed to accommodate a demanding alpine climate, respond sensitively to its forested setting, and achieve the level of architectural refinement typically associated with custom on-site construction. The core challenge was designing and delivering a site-specific home when traditional construction methods were increasingly impractical.

SOLUTION

We utilized off-site building technologies as the foundation of the delivery strategy. The home was fully designed in our Boise studio, with the building broken down into prefabricated components manufactured under controlled conditions. These elements were then transported to the site for final assembly. This approach reduced reliance on scarce local labor, improved quality control, and compressed the overall construction schedule. Architecturally, the residence is composed of familiar mountain forms expressed with clean proportions. Gabled rooflines facilitate snow shedding, while deep overhangs protect exterior materials and create sheltered outdoor spaces. A robust material palette of natural wood siding, stone masonry, and standing-seam metal roofing ensures longevity and performance in the high-altitude environment. The design carefully integrates prefabrication with architectural expression. Structural modules, wall assemblies, and major building elements were coordinated early in the design process to ensure that transportation, craning, and on-site assembly were seamless. Windows, exterior detailing, and interior finishes were resolved with high precision prior to fabrication, allowing the finished home to feel cohesive and custom rather than modular. Interior spaces are organized to support both daily living and entertaining, with generous gathering areas oriented toward the landscape. Circulation and structure are expressed honestly, reinforcing the clarity of the building system while maintaining the warmth appropriate to a mountain residence. RESULT The Glenwood Springs residence demonstrates how off-site construction can be successfully leveraged to deliver a site-responsive mountain home in a constrained labor market. By separating design and fabrication from on-site assembly, the project achieved greater predictability in cost, schedule, and execution without compromising architectural intent. The completed home feels grounded in its Colorado setting, offering durability, comfort, and refinement. It represents a forward-looking approach to residential construction in the Roaring Fork Valley.
