Mountain Home Air Force Base Commissary
Location
Mountain Home, Idaho
CHALLENGE
The Mountain Home Air Force Base required a new commissary to serve the needs of military personnel and their families. Designed by noted architect Gunnar Birkerts, the project demanded careful execution of a complex and high-profile design while meeting federal building standards, security requirements, and operational efficiency goals. The challenge was to translate a nationally designed concept into a constructible facility that addressed local site conditions and the daily needs of the base community.
SOLUTION
We provided construction administration and served as the project representative on site, bridging the gap between design intent and field execution. Our role focused on ensuring quality control, coordinating with contractors, and resolving design and construction issues in real time. This on-the-ground involvement helped maintain the integrity of Birkerts’ architectural vision while adapting to the practical realities of construction at Mountain Home.
RESULT
The completed commissary has become a cornerstone resource for the Air Force community, combining architectural ambition with day-to-day usability. Its design reflects a strong institutional identity, while the successful administration and oversight ensured a durable, efficient, and welcoming facility. The project demonstrates how close collaboration between nationally recognized designers and local representatives can deliver both vision and value.
