Mark Wagner has been practicing architecture for over thirty years, delivering more than 300 projects across commercial, institutional, civic, and residential sectors with a combined construction value exceeding $250 million.

He grew up in North Idaho with Chicago roots. His grandfather was the kind of Chicagoan who followed the city's architecture the way others follow sports: newspaper clippings at the dinner table, conversations about what was being built and what it meant. Architecture was part of the family conversation long before it was a course of study.

After earning his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Idaho in 1994, Mark spent eight months on-site at Mountain Home Air Force Base (MHAFB) as the architect's representative on a large USAF commissary project, watching everything get built in real time and negotiating field conditions with contractors daily.

From there, his career took a deliberately wide path: log and timber construction at Precision Craft, co-founding Gravitas Design, building the architectural division at Tamarack Grove Engineering from zero to a profitable international practice, and returning to Cole Architects as Principal Architect, a firm leadership role spanning design direction, client relationships, and project delivery.

What drives him is learning. Learning about people, new technologies, better ways to build, more sustainable uses of materials. And equally: understanding each client. How a developer evaluates risk, how a homeowner lives their daily life, how a business owner thinks about their operations, how an institution serves its community.

Fine Line Studio is a principal-led practice. When you hire Fine Line, you work directly with Mark Wagner from the first conversation through construction completion. No hand-offs. No junior staff managing your project.

Career Timeline

Three decades across practice types and project scales

2013–Present

Fine Line Studio: Principal Architect

Founded and has continuously led this principal-led practice serving commercial, institutional, developer, and residential clients across Idaho, Washington, Oregon, and Hawaii. During this period, Mark also took staff leadership roles at Tamarack Grove Engineering (2018-2021) and Cole Architects (2016-2018, 2022-2024), returning to full-time Fine Line Studio practice in each case.

2022–2024

Cole Architects: Principal Architect

Served as Principal Architect and firm leadership at Cole Architects -- a senior role with direct responsibility for project delivery, client relationships, and design direction. Not an ownership position, but a genuine leadership role within the firm. Led commercial and institutional projects including schools, office buildings, and civic facilities through design, documentation, and construction administration.

2018–2021

Tamarack Grove Engineering: Director of Architecture

Built the architectural division from startup to profitable international practice. Led design and delivery on commercial, industrial, and institutional projects across multiple states.

2016–2018

Cole Architects: Project Manager

Project manager on commercial and institutional commissions. Managed client relationships, consultant coordination, and construction administration.

2001–2013

Gravitas Design: Founding Principal

Led architectural practice through over a decade of commercial, residential, and institutional work across the world.

1997–2001

Precision Craft Log & Timber: Design Department Manager

Architecture and design for log and timber frame construction. Expertise in alternative building systems and high-performance residential construction.

1994–1997

CSHQA Architects: Project Manager

First position out of school. Spent eight months on-site at Mountain Home Air Force Base as architect's representative on a large USAF commissary project, negotiating field conditions with contractors daily. Also contributed to standardization work on a national Safeway rollout -- first exposure to prototype design at scale.

1989–1994

University of Idaho: Bachelor of Architecture

Five-year professional degree program in Moscow, Idaho. Formative exposure to Chicago's architectural heritage through family -- conversations about what was being built and what it meant -- established an understanding of buildings as civic acts long before formal study began.
