Challenge
The O'Neil ADU required a purpose-built accessory dwelling unit that could deliver a complete, self-contained residential experience within a compact footprint while maintaining architectural character consistent with its site and primary residence context. ADUs are often treated as afterthoughts; this one deserved the same design attention as any custom residential project.
Solution
The design treats the ADU as a complete small residence: not a reduced version of a larger house, but a building proportioned and detailed specifically for its compact program. The exterior character, material selection, and window placement are resolved to create a building with its own architectural identity that also reads appropriately alongside its primary residence.
Result
A purpose-built ADU with genuine architectural character: demonstrating Fine Line's ability to apply the same design discipline to compact residential programs that larger custom homes receive.
