Challenge
The Los Altos Residence is a large, established custom home in one of the Bay Area's most affluent communities. The owners wanted a comprehensive renovation that would bring the entire building to a contemporary standard of finish and spatial quality - kitchen, great room, dining room, entry foyer, multiple bedrooms, bathrooms, and sunrooms - while maintaining the scale and formal organization that gives the house its character. Every room was in scope. Every material decision was a design problem.
Solution
The renovation establishes a consistent palette of white millwork, dark hardwood floors, and natural stone as the primary material framework across all main living spaces, then expresses individual character in each room through deliberate departures from that framework. The kitchen receives a blue-grey island with a Carrara marble waterfall edge and custom lantern pendants; the entry foyer a statement chandelier and board-and-batten wainscot; each bathroom its own tile story. The great room's vaulted beadboard ceiling and fireplace wall anchor the informal living sequence, while the dining room's coffered tray ceiling with cove lighting creates a distinct formal register. Each space reads as part of a coherent whole while retaining its own identity.
Result
A fully transformed large California residence - photographed in its entirety across kitchen, living, dining, entry, four bathrooms, primary bedroom suite, children's rooms, stair hall, and sunrooms. The project demonstrates Fine Line's ability to deliver whole-house renovation work at the scale and material quality that Bay Area residential clients expect, coordinating multiple trades and finish systems across a complex existing building without losing the design coherence that makes the result feel resolved rather than merely upgraded.

The Los Altos Residence demonstrates what whole-house renovation means when it is done with genuine design discipline. This is not a series of independent room upgrades - it is a coordinated architectural transformation of a large home, where the decisions in the kitchen inform the decisions in the entry, which inform the decisions in the bath, which inform the decisions in the bedroom. Material consistency is the connective tissue; individual character is the reward.
The kitchen's blue-grey island sets the tone: a deliberate accent color within a white-and-marble framework, restrained enough to feel sophisticated rather than trendy. The four bathrooms each receive their own material story - floral wallpaper powder room, teal Moroccan-tile bath, natural oak double vanity, grey hexagon tile with steel shower surround - unified by the consistency of hardware finish and the quality of the tile work.
The great room's vaulted beadboard ceiling and fireplace alcove establish the informal heart of the house. The dining room's coffered tray with cove lighting establishes the formal one. Both work because they are proportioned correctly for the spaces they inhabit. These are decisions that only matter when the architect is present in the room, not reviewing drawings at a distance.
